Fitchburg State Downs Anna Maria, 5-1

Boice and Zajac collect three apiece for Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass. (March 27, 2013) – The Fitchburg State baseball team extended its winning streak to three games as it defeated Anna Maria College, 5-1 at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field on the campus of Franklin Pierce University this evening

The Falcons were led offensively by senior Jeff Boice (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) who went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, homerun and two RBI, while juniorMatt Zajac (New Hartford, Conn./St. Paul) posted three singles and one run scored. Freshman Andrew Montiverdi (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech) collected a double and drove in the lone run for Anna Maria, while five other Amcats registered hits.

Fitchburg State broke a 0-0 deadlock in the fourth inning as Zajac and junior David Mason (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) connected on back-to-back singles to open the inning. Junior Alex Heroux (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) plated a pair of runs on single and an error before Boice blasted a two-run homer to left field for the 4-0 margin.

The Falcons upped their lead (5-0) in the following inning as senior Cody Bamforth (Vernon, Conn./Rockville) singled to second base, advanced to second on a wild pitch and eventually came around to score a throwing error.

Anna Maria broke its scoring silence in the bottom of the eighth frame as Montiverdi connected on a two double to left field to plate senior Joe McNeil (Sutton, Mass./Sutton), who singled earlier in the inning to cut the lead to 5-1.

On the mound, senior Zachary Bombria (Bolton, Conn./Bolton) earned the win, allowing just one earned run on four hits and six K's in six innings of relief for Fitchburg State, while senior Kevin Wodatch (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) took the loss, allowing five runs (4 earned) on eight hits and four strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work for the Amcats.

Fitchburg State (7-4, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to action tomorrow as it hosts the Colonels of Curry College at 3:30 p.m. (Game will be played at Curry College with Fitchburg State as the home team), while Anna Maria (3-11, 0-2 GNAC) will visit Eastern Nazarene College tomorrow for a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
