Fitchburg State Defeated by Anchormen, 4-1

FITCHBURG, Mass. - Fitchburg State University  (10-11) was held to just four hits as they were defeated by Rhode Island College (14-7), 4-1, in a non-conference baseball contest on Wednesday afternoon at Riccards Field.

The Anchormen broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning when Joe Yankee reached first on an error by the second baseman that scored Brad Douglas to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Fitchburg State would answer in their following at-bats when Sam Brown singled to second base that scored Mike St. John to bring the game to a 1-1 deadlock.

Tyler Rains hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate home Patrick Rogers that gave RIC their second lead of the game at, 2-1. The Anchormen added to their advantage the following inning on a Matt Foley RBI single to left field and a sacrifice RBI fly by Rogers on a diving catch by Steve McFadden in left field that scored Yankee from second.

The RIC bullpen held Fitchburg State to just two hits to preserve the 4-1 lead for the victory.

Tom Gammell had a solid outing on the mound despite suffering the loss, throwing six innings with one earned run and five strikeouts. His counterpart Jake Murray was just as stellar holding the Falcons to two hits over five innings with one earned run.

Fitchburg State will be on the road tomorrow as they travel to Daniel Webster for 4:00pm. Rhode Island College will be at Curry College tomorrow at 3:30pm.
