Auburndale, Fla. – The Fitchburg State University baseball team dropped an 11-1, eight innings decision to the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University in non-conference action this morning at Lake Myrtle Field number 3.

How It Happened

John Carroll raced out to a 5-0 lead through five innings. Freshman Jack Bennett (North Canton, Ohio) had the big hit in the fifth inning with a single down the left-field line scoring a pair of teammates.

Junior Jaime Velez (Lowell, Mass.) tripled to deep centerfield to start things off for the Falcons in the top of the sixth. Two batters later grad student Connor Morehouse (Wetherby Lake, MO) delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Velez to cut the deficit to 5-1.

The Blue Streaks' put the game out of reach when senior Matt Cassaro (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) pasted a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth frame.

Inside the Numbers

 

  • Freshman hurler Jason Bickford (Exeter, NH) had a strong performance in his Falcon debut. He pitched 4.1 strong innings in relief of Morehouse who only faced one batter. Bickford's stat line read 4 runs on 5 hits with 5 walks and 5 strikeouts.
  • Velez and first-year Liam Goldstein (Charlestown, RI) paced the Falcons with two hits
  • JCU pitcher Matthew Aukerman (Hudson, Ohio) went six strong innings with 9 k's for the win.
