Falcons Post Win Over Fighting Scots

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University baseball team earned a 10-7 victory over the Fighting Scots of Gordon College in non-conference action on a windy afternoon at Riccards Field.

How It Happened

Senior Brendan Ferrell (Plymouth, Mass.) launched the first pitch in the bottom of the first inning to deep right field for the 1-0 lead for the Falcons. Fitchburg State would double the score (2-0) with an RBI single from Richard Sharp (Townsend, Mass.).

The Fighting Scots responded in the top of the second Gabe Coyne-Martinez (Pittsfield, Mass.) drove home CJ Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) who had singled to lead off the inning. The next batter Dalton Cody (Barre, VT) delivered an RBI double down the left field line to knot the score at 2-2.

The Falcons forged ahead 4-2 with a two-run home run to left-center from senior Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.) in the bottom of the third.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Falcon extended the lead to 10-2. The Green and Gold would capitalize on a defensive miscue from the Fighting Scots for four unearned runs. Junior Zachary Malek (Schenectady, NY) and senior Zachary Morris (Salem, NH) each had RBI sacrifice hits and Connor Morehouse (Wetherby Lake, Mo.) notched an RBI double down the left-field line.

Gordon battled back in the top of the seventh inning, with the bases loaded senior Patrick Tevenan (South Weymouth, Mass.) drew a walk and freshman Robert Dunkle (Trumbull, Conn.) was hit-by-a-pitch to cut the deficit to 10-4. The Fighting Scots pushed the score to 10-6 with a single up the middle from Jalen Coyne-Martinez (Pittsfield, Mass.).

Fitchburg State freshman Jason Bickford (Exeter, NH) struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the win.

Inside the Numbers

 

  • Fitchburg State freshman Robert Clarke (Plymouth, Mass.) earned the victory for the Falcons. He pitched six strong innings, allowing six runs on nine hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
  • Eramo was a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI's while Ferrell was 3-for-4.
  • Jacob Hitchcock (Goodyear, Ariz) took the loss for Gordon, he went 5.1 innings with six earned runs on eight hits with four K's.
