Falcons Fall To Engineers In Non-Conference Action

Northboro, Mass. - The Fitchburg State University baseball team dropped a 17-7 decision to the Engineers of WPI this afternoon in non-conference action from the New England Baseball Complex.

How It Happened

WPI opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as junior Kyle Johns (Milltown, N.J.) singled through the left side to plate senior Andrew Brooks (Millis,, Mass.) before sophomore Jacob Hand (Nisayuna, N.Y.) launched a three-run home run to right center for the 4-0 advantage. 

The Engineers upped their margin (5-0) in the following frame when sophomore DJ Brooks (Danvers, Mass.) walked, moved to second and third on a groundout and a passed ball and crossed the plate on an RBI groundout by newcomer Gavin George (Salem, N.H.).

Fitchburg State responded in the top of third with sophomores Christopher Masta (Peabody, Mass.) and Devin Lorae (Canton, Ga.) notching back-to-back single, while senior Zachary Morris (Salem, N.H.) followed with a run scoring groundout before graduate student Connor Morehouse (Wetherby Lake, Mo.) laced a two-run single to left field to make the score 5-3.

The Falcons continued to battle, trimming the deficit to 6-5 in the top of the fourth as senior Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.) singled through the left side, advanced to second on a pitch and proceeded to score on a passed ball, while graduate student Richard Sharp (Townsend, Mass.) reached on a single and eventually stole home.

The Green and Gold took a 7-6 edge in the top of the seventh when Morris drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in freshman Ethan Blanchette (San Antonio, Tex.) and Morehouse drove in Masta with a groundout.

WPI secured the victory in the bottom of the seventh, scoring 11 runs on three hits, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of junior Joe Salvon (Longmeadow, Mass.), resulting in the 17-7 final.
