Davenport, Fla.  – The Fitchburg State baseball team dropped their first game of the season 14-1 in eight innings to the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth in action at the Russ Matt Invitational in Davenport, Fla.

How It Happened

Trailing 1-0, the Falcons evened the game in the bottom of the first inning. Matthew Kelly (East Bridgewater, Mass.) opened the frame with a single to center field and scored on a hit through the left side by Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.). Eramo was recently named the MASCAC Player of the Week.

After scoring one in the third the Corsairs put four runs up in the fourth inning. Senior DJ Perron (Swansea, Mass.) had a double down the left-field line for 2 RBIs. The Corsairs capitalized on a Falcons miscue in the sixth inning, adding another run and a sacrifice fly from Devyan Vezina (Coventry, RI) extended the lead to 8-1.

UMD would add an insurance run in the seventh and five more runs in the eighth for the 14-1 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Jason Bickford (Exeter, NH) pitched five innings with 2 Ks, allowing 6 earned runs in the loss for the Falcons
  • Bailey Griggs (West Springfield, Mass.) went two innings in relief, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits with 3 Ks
  • Will Pacheco (Franklin, Mass.) earned the win for UMD, going seven innings allowing just one run on seven hits with 3 strikeouts
  • Eramo was 3-for-4 on the day with an RBI
  • Freshman Adam Koza (Windham, NH) the reigning MASCAC Rookie of the Week, had 2 hits
