Falcons Clip Mavericks On Day Six Of RussMatt Invitational

Malek and Eramo register two RBI each for Green and Gold

Lake Myrtle, Fla. – The Fitchburg State baseball team defeated the Mavericks of Medaille University, 5-3 this morning in non-conference action at the Lake Myrtle Field #7 on day six of the RussMatt Invitational.

How It Happened

Medaille grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first frame as freshman Eric Arreola (Los Angeles, Calif.) singled to right center to plate classmate Jeff Petrozzini (Hopewell, N.J.) before junior Ean Pokorski (Amherst, N.Y.) scored on a failed pickoff attempt.

Fitchburg State trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the third when senior Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.) walked, moved to second on a fielders choice and came home on a wild pitch and throwing miscue.

The Mavericks upped the lead to 3-1 in the top half of the sixth with freshman Gabe Schrader (Fredonia, N.Y.) singling, advancing to third on double from sophomore Tyler Siwek (Hamburg, N.Y.) and coming home following a fielding miscue.

The Falcons rallied to knot the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh as junior Maxwell Kelly (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) singled to left, stole second and scored on a two-run blast over the left field fence by senior Zachary Malek (Schenectady, N.Y.).

The Green and Gold took the lead in the following frame when sophomore Matthew Smith (Flanders, N.J.) walk, pinch runner Jaime Velez (Lowell, Mass.) stole second, while junior Matthew Kelly (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) and Max Kelly drew back-to-back walks to load the bases before Eramo ripped a two-run double through the left side, resulting in the 5-3 victory.

  • Malek paced the Falcons, going 1-for-4 with a home run, one run scored and two RBI
  • Graduate student Lowell Pare (Leominster, Mass.) earned the win for Fitchburg State, allowing just one hit and seven K's over 3.2 innings of relief
  • For the Mavericks, Siwek finished 2-for-3 with a walk
  • Freshman Billy LoBello (North Royalton, Ohio) gave up one run on three hits with seven strikeouts in five innings of work in a no decision for Medaille
