Falcons Topped By Amcats In Non-Conference Action

Hurrell notches two hits and a pair of steals for Green and Gold

Northboro, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University Baseball team dropped a 6-3 decision to the Amcats of Anna Maria College this afternoon in non-conference action from the New England Baseball Complex.

How It Happened

Anna Maria grabbed a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning as senior Hunter Dunithan (Reno, Nev.) singled to open the frame before junior Christian Villa (Concord, Calif.) blasted a two-run shot to centerfield.

The Amcats upped the lead to 3-0 in the following inning when freshman AJ Guitron-Moore (Newport Harbor, Calif.) walked, stole second and eventually crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Tommy Sasso (Grafton, Mass.).

Fitchburg State answered in the top half of the third with sophomore Jacob Hurrell (Haverhill, Mass.) and junior Matthew Kelly (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) singled to put runners on the corners before senior Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.) drove in Hurrell with a sacrifice fly, while Kelly came in on a wild pitch. Senior Zachary Malek (Schenectady, N.Y) followed with an RBI single through the right side that scored junior Maxwell Kelly (E. Bridgewater, Mass.), who walked earlier in the inning to knot the score at 3-3.

Anna Maria regained the lead in the bottom of the third when Villa walked, moved to second on a groundout, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly from graduate student Jarrod Marifiote (Framingham, Mass.) for the 4-3 edge. The hosts pushed its lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth on a solo shot by Mafiriote.

The Amcats secured the victory in the bottom of the eighth as graduate student Kosta Drosidis (Holden, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a throwing miscue, resulting in the 6-3 final.
