Falcons Upended By Lions In Non-Conference Action

Hurrell launches first home run of the season for Green and Gold

Northboro, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University Baseball team dropped a 10-3 decision to the Lions of Emerson College this afternoon in non-conference action from the New England Baseball Complex.

How It Happened

Emerson grabbed a 2-0 edge in the bottom of third frame as senior Jake Hatch (Carlisle, Mass.) blasted a solo shot to left field, while junior Blake Benway (Fairfield, Conn.) added an RBI single to centerfield to bring in senior Thai Morgan (Waldwick, N.J.).

The Falcons cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the fourth when junior Matthew Kelly (E. Bridgewater, Mas.) singled, moved to second on a throwing miscue, advance to third on back-to-back hit b=y pitches from classmate Maxwell Kelly (E. Bridgewater, Mass.) and senior Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.) before sophomore Michael Cooper (Fitchburg, Mass.) laced an RBI single up the middle to plate Kelly.

The Lions upped the lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth with sophomore Briggs Loveland (Burlson, Tex.) Benway, Hatch, Morgan and sophomore Jordi Arboleda (New York, N.Y.) colleing RBI's.

The Falcons answered back in the top of the fifth as sophomore Jacob Hurrell (Haverhill, Mass.) launched a solo home run to right center to trim the lead to 7-2, but Emerson got the run back in their half of the fifth with Loveland drove in graduate student Quinton Copeland (Houston, Tex.) with a sacrifice fly to right field to push the lead to 8-2.

The Green and Gold responded in the top of the sixth when freshman Adam Koza (Windham, N.H.) laced an RBI single to left field that scored Cooper (8-3), but the Lions secured the victory in the bottom of the sixth with Hatch notching his second home run of the contest, while Loveland added a sacrifice fly to centerfield, resulting in the 10-3 final.
