Vikings Sail Past Falcons in MASCAC Clash

 

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State baseball team dropped a 9-2 decision to the Vikings of Salem State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Thursday afternoon at Riccards Field.

How It Happened

The Vikings scored the game's first run with two outs in the third inning. Brahiam Ortega (Lawrence, Mass.) singled to left field, stole second, and came around to score on a single up the middle from Owen Duggan (Billerica, Mass.).

Salem tacked on two more runs in the fourth capitalizing on a balk from Falcons pitcher Orion Daily (Pepperell, Mass.) and an RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Tyler Wilson (Lynn, Mass.). The Vikings extended the lead (5-0) with a 2 RBI single from Jake Boucher (Wallingford, Conn.) in the top of the fifth.

Fitchburg State broke through in the sixth inning. Junior Maxwell Kelly (E. Bridgewater) reached base on a fielder's choice and scored on a deep double to center field from Michael Cooper (Fitchburg, Mass.). Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.) stepped to the plate next and doubled in Cooper to cut the deficit to 6-2.

Salem State added three insurance runs in the ninth inning. Junior Greg Gentle (Arlington, Mass.) and Jake Boucher (Wallingford, Conn.) combine to pitch two clean innings to seal the victory for the Vikings.

Inside the Numbers

  • Dailey pitched six innings allowing five earned runs on ten hits with six strikeouts in the setback
  • Adam Koza (Windham, NH)  was 1-for-2 with a walk, while Jacob Hurrell (Haverhill, Mass.) was 1-for-2 with a triple and a walk for the Falcons
  • Bobby Jellison (Salem, Mass.) earned his first win of the season for Salem State
  • Ortega was 3-for-4 with 3 runs and a walk for the Vikings
