Eramo Sets Records, Falcons Fall to Rams on Senior Day

Fitchburg, Mass. – Graduate Student Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.) belted 2 home runs to tie the All-Time Falcons' record as the Fitchburg State baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the Rams of Framingham State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Riccards Field

The Falcons forged a valiant comeback before falling 13-10 in game one and fell 4-1 in the nightcap.

In between games, the Falcons recognized three seniors, Lowell Pare (Leominster, Mass.), Vincent Eramo (Shirley, Mass.), and Zachary Malek (Schenectady, NY) for their contributions to the Fitchburg State baseball program.

How It Happened – Game 1

Framingham State opened the game with two runs in the first and two in the second to hold a 4-0 lead. Senior Robert Johnson (Watertown, CT) and newcomer Shane Costello (Wilmington, Mass.) had RBI singles for the Rams

With one out in the bottom of the second Zachary Malek and Matthew Kelly (East Bridgewater, Mass.) had back-to-back singles. Freshman Adam Koza (Saugus, Mass.) stepped to the plate and delivered a deep double to right field to score both Malek and Kelly to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Rams broke the game open in the top of the fourth inning. Caleb Hendrix (Gorham, ME) doubled to left field scoring Steve Burbank (Canton, Mass.), who had opened the inning with a walk. Cam Gilroy (Salisbury, Mass.) knocked in two runs with a single to up the score to 11-2.

The Falcons battled back in the bottom of the fifth. Maxwell Kelly (East Bridgewater, Mass.) singled to open the frame and scored on a single down the right-field line from Matthew Smith (Flanders, NJ). Vinny Eramo scored Smith with a 2-run home run to left center field.

The Green and Gold closed the gap to 11-10 in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on second and third the Falcons capitalized on a Rams' miscue to score a pair. Next, with Kelly and Smith on the bags, Eramo blasted a home run to center field to make it a one-run ball game.

Framingham State added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh and Anthony Panza (Watertown, Mass.) pitched a clean bottom of the inning for his seventh save of the season.

 Inside the Numbers – Game 1

  • Sy Sullivan (Tigard, Ore.) took the loss for the Falcons allowing 6 runs on 4 hits in two innings of work
  • James Gilleran earned his sixth win of the season allowing 5 runs on 10 hits with 3 K's
  • Gilroy led the Rams going 3-for-4 with 3 RBI
  • Eramo was 3-for-4 with 2 HR, 5 RBI, a stolen base, and 2 runs scored, while Koza was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI
  • Eramo tied the all-time home run record with his second blast of the day. He equaled Gary Blanchette's '88 career mark of 21 home runs. Blanchette was at today's game and threw out a ceremonial first pitch.
  • In addition to the home run mark Eramo also broke the career total bases record (258) and the single-season RBI mark (46). John Phelan '11 held the total record and Kris Breen held the RBI mark of 46 in 2009.

How It Happened – Game 2

Shane Costello led off game two with a walk and advanced to third on a double to center field from Steven Burbank. A sacrifice fly from Ryan Boyle gave the Rams the 1-0 lead. Framingham extended the advantage to 3-0 with RBI hits from Caleb Hendrix and Robert Johnson.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Zachery Malek led off with a triple to center field and scored on Devin Lorae's infield single to cut the deficit to 4-1 but it wouldn't be enough and the Rams held on for the victory.

Inside the Numbers

  • Burbank led the Rams going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI
  • Eramo was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
  • Eramo tied the all-time season mark for total bases (99) on his second double
  • Both pitchers went the distance. Adam Martin earned his fourth win of the season allowing just one run on five hits and 7 Ks. Adam Wholley (Londonderry, NH) suffered the setback for the Falcons allowing four runs on seven hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts
