Baseball Surpasses Anna Maria

NORTHBOROUGH, MA: Fitchburg State baseball took down Anna Maria College this afternoon in a nine-inning non-conference contest at the New England Baseball Complex.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 3/26/24

- Score: Fitchburg 9, Anna Maria 6

- Records: Fitchburg (5-11), Anna Maria (6-11)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  The Falcons quickly took the lead in the top of the first. Jacob Hurrell (Haverhill, MA) brought in two of his three RBIs on the day with a double, giving Fitchburg a 2-0 lead. They would hold that lead and add on in the second, fourth, and sixth, putting them up 5-0 before the AMCATS could respond. Anna Maria got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth on a Matt Beuka single that plated one. The Falcons responded with a three-run top of the seventh to extend their lead to 8-1. However, Anna Maria would string walks, hits, and a defensive error together to put up five in the bottom half of the frame. Beuka delivered again in the bottom of the seventh by driving in two on a single. It wouldn't be enough for Anna Maria as Fitchburg held them at the six runs.

The Falcons were topped offensively by Hurrell, who was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Matthew Kelly (E. Bridgewater, MA) followed him with two hits and two runs batted in. Fitchburg second baseman Matthew Smith (Flanders, NJ) had a team-best three hits on the day.

- The AMCATS top performers in their lineup were Beuka and Kosta Drosidis. Beuka had two hits in five at-bats with three RBIs. Drosidis topped the team with a three-hit day.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Jason Bickford (Exeter, NH) (W, 2-3) pitched 6.2 innings in the win, giving up just three hits and striking out six. Sy Sullivan (Tigard, OR) got the save with a scoreless two-inning effort.
