Falcons name seven to Worcester Area All-Star team; Thornton and Russell earn NEFC All-Division honors

FITCHBURG, Mass. (December 1, 2008) - The Fitchburg State football team named seven players to the 18th annual Worcester Area All-Star team as selected by the Sports Information Directors of the Worcester area.

Heading the pack for Fitchburg State are senior running-back Marlon Thornton (Bromfield, Conn./Bromfield) and sophomore  Kenneth Russell, Jr. (Bedford, Mass./Bedford). Thornton was named to the Worcester Area All-Star first team, while earning his second consecutive NEFC All-Conference accolade with a second team nomination. Thornton led the Falcons rushing attack all season, posting 1252 yards and 13 touchdowns on 213 carries (5.9 yards/carry).

Kenneth Russell, Jr. picked up his first collegiate honor being named to New England Football Conference and Worcester Area second team. The sophomore wide-receiver collected a team-high 1057 yards through the air, while adding seven TD's on 105.7 yards receiving per game.

Senior quarterback Jim Miller (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) also earned a Worcester Area All-Star team nomination after being named the 2008 Worcester Area Offensive Player of the Year. Miller had a career season, posting a conference best 2577 passing yards and 31 total touchdowns. He registered an impressive 125.09 quarterback rating with 22 passing TD's, while posting 223 yards on the ground and nine rushing scores.

Joining the Falcons' triple threat on the Worcester Area All-Star team is senior captain Jim Foltz (Bedford, Mass./Bedford), junior kicker Evan Georgopoulos (Melrose, Mass./Melrose), freshman Sean Golden (Montville, Conn./Montville) and classmate Andrew Cavanagh (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union). Golden was named to the All-Area first team while Foltz, Georgopoulos and Cavanagh earned second team bids.

Fitchburg State concluded its season with an overall record of 4-6, including 4-3 mark in the NEFC.
