Tequesta, Fla. Native among top players in region invited to professional tryout

FITCHBURG, Mass. (March 11, 2010) – After a successful, two-year career at Fitchburg State College, senior running back Steve Austin (Tequesta, Fla./Stony Brook) represented the Falcons football team this afternoon as he was invited to participate in the Boston College Pro Scout Day.

For the second consecutive season, the Fitchburg State football program had a member selected to participate in the New England Region scout day as former standout Marlon Thornton attended the 2008 tryout.  Austin, a New England Football Conference (NEFC) All-Conference selection, joins participants from over 40 schools in the New England area for the workout as professional scouts and assistant coaches from NFL teams recruit for the upcoming season.

“I could not be happier for Steve to get invited for an NFL tryout, especially playing his senior season with an injury,” said head coach Paul McGonagle. “This is a great testament not only to his work ethic but also his character.”

This season, Austin headed a list of seven Fitchburg State football players who earned post-season honors as the senior standout collected four, post-season awards. Austin captured NEFC All-Conference first team and Worcester Area All-Star first team honors, while also being named to the NEFC All-Academic team and Team Stars & Stripes for Mexico City’s, Bowl of the Stars.

Throughout the 209 campaign, Austin paced Fitchburg State's rushing attack with 839 yards and five TDs, averaging nearly 100 yards per game and 4.6 per carry. The senior RB was invited to participate in the Tazon De Estrella (Bowl of the Stars), becoming one of 51 players spanning over 35 colleges and 20 states, to make the squad.

Over his two-year career with the Falcons, Austin appeared in 19 career games for Fitchburg State, rushing for 1255 yards and six touchdowns. He played a versatile role on the gridiron both at running back and wide receiver, racking up 2,091 all-purpose yards with 258 carries, 61 receptions and 585 yards receiving.

The Fitchburg State football team concluded its 2009 season with an overall record of 4-6 and a 2-5 mark in the New England Football Conference.
