Fitchburg State Upends Curry, 31-3

Wrice-Brooks and Dellechiaie led Falcons to second victory of the season

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University football team was in action this evening, defeating Curry College, 31-3 in non-conference action this evening at the Walter M. Katz field in Milton.  

Fitchburg State opened the scoring with 4:29 remaining in the first quarter as junior quarterback Garrett Dellechiaie hit sophomore receiver Jesse Lastra down the steam for a 32 yard touchdown strike, capping a seven play, 45 yard drive for the 7-0 advantage.

The Falcons upped their lead (10-0) with 9:12 left in the second quarter on a 22 yard field goal from junior place kicker Christopher Ludwig, following an interception by senior Taron Seaforth-Howard at the Colonels 14 yard line.

Following the break, the Green and Gold embarked on a six play, 60 yard drive to open the third quarter as junior tailback Taylor Wrice-Brooks finished off the drive with a five yard rush up the middle to make the score 17-0 with 12:43 remaining in the frame.

The visitors proceeded to recover the ensuing kickoff, going 62 yards on seven plays as senior Jordan Almore dove in from one yard out as the Falcons increased its lead to 24-0 two minutes later.

In the final stanza, Fitchburg State upped its margin (31-0) with 7:48 left in the contest as Dellechiaie found senior Trayvon Neal in far corner of the end zone for a four yard touchdown reception to polish off a 17 play, 88 yard drive.

Curry College broke its scoring silence with two minutes left in the contest when newcomer Marc Mrozek drilled a 33 yard field goal attempt, finishing a 13 play, 66 yard drive for the Colonels, resulting in the 31-3 final.

Dellechiaie paced the Falcons offense, finishing 17-for-27 with 160 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns. Lastra led all Fitchburg State receivers, hauling in a career best eight passes for 91 yards and a score, while Brooks-Wrice paced the Falcons running game, rushing for 81 yards on 16 carries and one score

Junior signal caller Mike O'Hearn led the way for Curry, completing 25-of-40 passes for 156 yards through the air, while junior wide out Anthony Nastasi concluded the contest with ten catches for a game-best 98 yards.

Defensively, Seaforth-Howard led the way for Fitchburg State, totaling a team-leading seven tackles with one interception, while classmate Tre Watson added six stops, including one tackle for loss and an interception.

For Curry, sophomore Steve Grogan led all tacklers with eight stops on seven solo tackles and on assist, while freshman Luc Zikianda added eight stops (five solo, three assisted), one sack and a fumble recovery.

Fitchburg State (2-0, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to action next Saturday as it travels to Framingham State to take on the Rams at 12 p.m. Curry (0-2, 0-0 NEFC) will visit Anna Maria next Saturday for a contest starting at 3 p.m.
