Spencer Named 70th Annual Nils V. “Swede” Nelson Award Recipient

Foxboro, Mass. native collects second yearly accolade of the season

BOSTON, Mass. – Fitchburg State senior wide receiver Ty Spencer has been named the 70th annual Nils V. "Swede" Nelson Award winner for Division III as announced by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston yesterday evening.

The fourth-year Falcon has achieved an outstanding grade point average of 3.89, while majoring in Architecture at the University. Throughout his four-year career, Spencer has etched his name into Fitchburg State's record books, hold the program's all-time career marks in receptions (163), receiving yards (2,270) and touchdown catches (21) in 34 games played.

The Nils V. "Swede" Nelson Award recognizes the top New England football student-athletes in DI, DII and DIII for exceptional achievement in sportsmanship, academics and athletics. Joining Spencer are division I honoree from Brown University, wide out Brian Strachan and division II recipient from Stonehill College, defensive back Anthony Massucci.

Fitchburg State (8-2, 6-2 MASCAC) returns to action on Sunday as it takes on the Saxons of Alfred University in the 2015 Robert M. "Scotty" Whitelaw Bowl Championship, hosted by Central Connecticut State at 5 p.m.
