Spartans Run Past Football

FITCHBURG, MA: Fitchburg State football fell to Vermont State Castleton this afternoon in non-conference action.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 9/9/23

- Score: Castleton 32, Fitchburg 3

- Records: Castleton (2-0), Fitchburg (0-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  The low scoring first half saw the Falcons get on the board first after an opening drive interception return by Jayelinn Miller (Tacoma, WA). Miller's 49-yard interception return set Fitchburg up with a first and goal opportunity. The Spartans defense was able to keep the Falcons from breaking into the endzone, holding them to just a 20-yard field goal by Jonah Costa (E. Providence, RI).

- The Spartans would respond on the following drive by getting into the red zone on 13 plays and 63 yards. The Falcons defense came up big, stopping the run game of Castleton, forcing them to settle for the 22-yard field goal from Noah Crossman. Castleton would score again before the half on a quarterback rush by Evan Smith to the right pylon, giving the Spartans a 10-3 lead going into the half.  

- The Second half was all the Spartans as they scored three touchdowns on long runs by Devin Wollner and Christian Keeli. Wollner scored the first touchdown of the half on a 27-yard run right up the gut of the Falcons defense that he broke off to the left pylon. Keeli would follow that up on the very next drive with a 57-yard TD scamper. Keeli wasn't done, however, as he would score his second TD of the day on the following drive to give Castleton 32 unanswered points. The four-yard plunge into the endzone would be the last score of the day.

-  Passing Yards: Castleton 89, Fitchburg 72

-  Rushing Yards: Castleton 210, Fitchburg 16

- Turnovers: Fitchburg 1, Castleton 2
