FITCHBURG, MA: Fitchburg State football was defeated by Westfield State in the final MASCAC contest of the fall.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 11/11/23

- Score: Westfield State 49, Fitchburg State 0

- Records: Fitchburg State (0-10, 0-8 MASCAC), Westfield State (3-7, 3-5 MASCAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  The Owls struck first with a 5-play drive led by the run game of Jordan Smith, who totaled 39 yards and a touchdown on their first drive of the game. The Falcons were driving after tight end Quincy Taylor (Boston, MA) had a nice catch over the top of Westfield defender for 25 yards. But seven plays later, Cosner's pass was intercepted by Westfield safety Christian Julian, which led to a 40-yard rushing touchdown by Smith again. After Fitchburg fumbled the kickoff return, Smith rushed for his 3rd touchdown of the 1st quarter, making it 21-0 Westfield.

-  The second quarter was controlled by the Owls; Smith recorded his 4th touchdown of the afternoon off a long 30-yard run. Their second score of the quarter was a 12-yard receiving touchdown by wide receiver Michael Foley, making the score 35-0 Westfield at Half.

-  Fitchburg State's defense started the second half very strong with a 4th down stand and forcing a punt on their first two defensive drives of the 3rd quarter. But on that third drive, Smith found the endzone again for his 5th rushing touchdown of the day.

-  The fourth quarter was controlled by turnovers, with six combined turnovers in the late action of this game. The only score to come out of this 4th quarter was a 24-yard receiving touchdown for Westfield wide receiver Owen Thompson, making the score 49-0 Westfield.
