Fitchburg State Rallies Past Wheelock, 5-0

Jacobs posts two scores in Falcons victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 22, 2008) - The Fitchburg State field hockey team rebounded with a 5-0 victory over Wheelock College in non-conference action this evening at Elliot Field.

Sophomore Meghan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) led the Fitchburg State charge with four points on two goals, while senior Heather Di Terlizzi (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and classmate Paula Bartalamia (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) each added one goal and one assist. Newcomer Heather Jerome (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) was also solid with one score and one helper.

Fitchburg State exploded for four consecutive goals over the course of 8:49 to open the contest and take a commanding 4-0 lead. Di Terlizzi and Bartalamia ignited the rally with back-to-back goals, while Jacobs capped the scoring drive with her third and fourth goal of the season.

Fitchburg State scored the lone goal of the second half as Jerome tipped in a Eleni Aidonidis (Winchendon, Mass./Saint Bernard's) pass to give the Falcons a 5-0 cushion.

The Fitchburg State offense was solid, totaling 23 total shots in the contest, while the Falcons defense limited Wheelock to only five shots, including zero in the first half. Sophomore goaltender Taylor Van Ahnen (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) recorded three saves to earn her second shutout of the season, while sophomore Meredith Race (Marion, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) stopped ten shots for the Wildcats

Fitchburg State (3-3, 1-1 LEC) is back in action Saturday as it travels to Salem State College  at 12 p.m. Wheelock College (1-6, 1-0 NAC) will host Saint Joseph's of Maine on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
