Falcons earn third overtime victory of the season with key LEC win
PLYMOUTH, N.H. (October 17, 2009) - The Fitchburg State field hockey team collected its third overtime victory of the season, defeating Plymouth State University with a 1-0 penalty stroke win in Little East Conference action this afternoon.

After 70 minutes of scoreless regulation and 30 minutes of scoreless overtime, Fitchburg State finally registered its tenth victory of the season as junior Torey Van Ahnen (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) connected for the game-winning stroke in the final round of penalty strokes
Fitchburg State led off the first series of penalty strokes, sending a veteran crew to the line. Junior Mari Roma (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough), senior Vanessa Truax (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro), classmate Eleni Aidonidis (Winchendon, Mass./Saint Bernards) and junior Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) each had an attempt on net, but Van Ahnen sealed the victory for the Falcons with her second game-winning penalty stroke of the year.
Plymouth State held a 17-7 advantage in shots, including an 11-1 advantage during regulation but Fitchburg State picked up its offensive momentum in the extra frames, totaling six shots and seven penalty corners. Junior Taylor Van Ahnen (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) was strong between the pipes for the Falcons, registering her fourth shutout of the season with ten stops. Freshman Hannah Sawyer (Kingston, N.H./Sanborn Regional) mirrored Van Ahnen throughout most of the contest, stopping three shots in the process for the Panthers.
Fitchburg State (10-3, 7-1 LEC) will be in action again on Wednesday as it hosts Westfield State College at 7 p.m. Plymouth State (8-5, 4-4 LEC) will host the University of Southern Maine on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
