Falcon Pair Earns All-Academic Post-Season Honors

Byler, Kearney named to the 2010 LEC All-Academic squad

FITCHBURG, Mass. (January 19, 2011) – The Fitchburg State field hockey team named two players to the 2010 Little East Conference (LEC) All-Academic team as announced by the league office earlier this week.

Juniors Saralyn Byler (Belleville, Pa./Belleville) and Kathleen Kearney (Meriden, Conn./Francis T. Maloney) were the lone award winners for the Falcons, achieving the required 3.3 grade point average and sophomore academic/athletic status. This year, the Little East honored a total of 186 student-athletes over seven fall sponsored championship sports.

Byler, a Psychology major at the University, has been a three-year member of the Fitchburg State field hockey team. This season, she started all 18 games for the Falcons, serving a primary role the defensive line. Byler led Fitchburg State with two defensive saves, while lifting the Falcons to the top of the conference with a minimal 1.05 goals against average.

Kearney, a Nursing major at the University, has been a two-year member of the Fitchburg State field hockey squad. This season, she saw action in all 18 games, collecting her first collegiate goal in an 8-0 win over Anna Maria College. Kearney finished the 2010 season with two total points, while seeing significant action in the Falcons midfield through 15 starts.  

The Fitchburg State field hockey team concluded its 2010 season with an overall record of 10-8 and a 6-5 mark in the LEC. The Falcons advanced to the Little East Conference tournament, falling to fourth-seeded Keene State College, 1-0 in overtime.
