Four Falcons Named To LEC All-Conference Teams

Fitchburg State earns three second team nods and one third team accolade

 

FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 10, 2010) – The Fitchburg State field hockey team named four players to the Little East Conference (LEC) All-Conference teams this season as announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.

Seniors Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton), Mari Roma (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) and Torey Van Ahnen (Seekonk, Mass./Seekonk) led the way for Fitchburg State with a trio of All-Conference second team honors, while sophomore Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) notched an All-Conference third team award.

This season, Jacobs and Roma combined for 86 points to lead the active, Fitchburg State offense. The duo propelled the Falcons into the LEC Tournament as the Falcons earned the fifth seed with an overall record of 10-8 and a 6-5 mark in the conference.

Jacobs collected her first post-season honor of her career after ranking first on the Fitchburg State squad with 45 points on 18 goals and nine assists. The senior forward notched two, game-winning goals, while starting all 18 games for the Falcons. Currently, Jacobs remains only three goals shy of the all-time career mark of 36 set by Amy Kosiewski from 1991-93. She has tallied 85 points (3rd) throughout her career, registering 33 markers (2nd) and 19 helpers (5th).

Roma also herald a strong 2010 campaign as the senior midfielder ranked second on the team in scoring with 41 points, 18 goals and five assists. She converted a team-best five, game-winning scores, leading Fitchburg State to victories over Worcester, Framingham, Eastern Connecticut, Lasell and Westfield.

Senior defender, Torey Van Ahnen joins Jacobs and Roma on the All-Conference second team, earning her first post-season accolade. Van Ahnen led the Fitchburg State back-line all season as the Falcon recorded a minimal 1.35 goals against average. The veteran center-back lifted the Falcons defense as they ranked first among all LEC teams in goals allowed and second overall in goals against average.

Rounding out the Little East All-Conference honorees is second-year forward, Jamie Kelley, who for the second straight season, ranked third on the team in scoring. In her sophomore campaign, Kelley notched a career-best 26 points, totaling seven goals and a team-high 12 assists. She ranked first in the Little East in assists, while ranking ninth overall in shots per game.
