Fitchburg State Rolls Past Becker, 9-0

Roma paces Falcons with third hat-trick of the season

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 27, 2010) – Senior Mari Roma (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) registered her third hat-trick of the season to lead Fitchburg State to a 9-0 non-conference victory over Becker College this evening.

Roma led all scorers, posting a game-high six points with three markers, while sophomore Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) added her first hat-trick of the year to pave the way. Senior Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) chipped in on the Falcons offensive explosion with a pair of markers throughout the night, while junior Kaylee Bergeron (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) capped the Fitchburg State scoring with a single tally.

Fitchburg State jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead after one half of play as Jacobs and Roma connected for back-to-back markers over a 1:20 span. Kelly gave the Falcons a 4-0 advantage with a pair of scorers over the 23rd and 24th minute of the match, before Bergeron lifted the Falcons a 5-0 lead heading into the break.

In the second half, the Falcons continued to pump their offense, adding four more goals for a 9-0 final score. Kelley completed her hat-trick in the opening minutes of the half, before Jacobs and Roma rifled off a flurry of scores to close the contest. Roma capped the scoring in the 70th minute, posting her third score of the game for her third hat-trick of the year.

Fitchburg State out-shot Becker 30-5 in the contest and held a commanding 11-3 margin in penalty corners. Freshman Rachel Mays (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) earned the victory for the Falcons with two saves in net, while Samantha-Jo Dilkes (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley) stopped 13 shots for the visitors.

Fitchburg State (10-6, 6-4 LEC) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to Southern Maine at 1 p.m. Becker (7-11, 5-2 NECC) will host Daniel Webster on Saturday at 11 a.m.
