Roma and Jacobs net a pair in Falcons third straight victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 7, 2010) – Senior Mari Roma (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) collected two goals this evening, lifting the Fitchburg State field hockey team to a 5-1, non-conference victory over Lasell College.

MEGAN JACOBS

Roma, who is currently riding a hot-streak with seven goals in her last three games, led the Fitchburg State offense with four points, while senior Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) also added a pair of markers. Junior Kaylee Bergeron (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) chipped in on the offensive front with one score in the contest, while freshman Rebecca Bush (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) and sophomore Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) both notched an assist.

Fitchburg State jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead after one half of play using a pair of Roma markers to open the contest. Roma put the Falcons on the board just 3:48 into the game and later doubled the Falcons lead at the 27:03 mark. Jacobs also hit home for the Falcons in the frame, recording her tenth goal of the season less than one minute later.

In the second half, Lasell ended its scoring drought as senior Tia Pratt (Oxford Hills, Maine/Oxford Hills) finished off a pass from freshman Hillary Joseph (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) to cut the Fitchburg State lead to two (3-1). The Falcons ended any Laser comeback however, tallying back-to-back scores over the final 12 minutes of play for its seventh victory of the season. Jacobs posted her team-leading 11th goal of the season to start the rally, while Bergeron capped the scoring with her eighth marker of the year.

For the third straight contest, the Falcons controlled the offensive end, limiting the Lasers to only seven shots in the contest, while posting 28 of their own. Sophomore Abbie Brown (Westford, Mass./Westford) earned the victory for Fitchburg State with five saves between the pipes, while junior goaltender Christine Thornton (Canton, Mass./Canton) stopped 14 shots for the Lasers.

Fitchburg State (7-3, 4-2 LEC) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to Bridgewater State at 3:30 p.m. Lasell (4-8, 0-4 NAC) will visit Castleton State on Saturday at 6 p.m.
