Southern Maine Stops Fitchburg State, 1-0 (OT)

Bubier nets game-winner for Huskies in fourth overtime minute

GORHAM, Maine. (October 30, 2010) – Sophomore Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine/Hebron Academy) redirected a pass from junior Whitney McDaniel (Livermore, Maine/Livermore Falls) for the game-winning goal minutes into the overtime period as the University of Southern Maine topped Fitchburg State, 1-0 in Little East Conference action this afternoon.

With the win, Southern Maine improves to 8-12 overall and 5-6 in the Little East Conference, while Fitchburg State falls to 10-7 on the season and 6-5 in conference play.

Both teams battled to a scoreless draw at the end of regulation. Fitchburg State and Southern Maine each had solid chances in regulation but the solid play of both goalkeepers kept the game at a 0-0 standstill. Falcon freshman Rachel Mays (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) made five saves throughout the setback, while senior Rachel Lolley (Gorham, Maine) and freshman Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) combined for three saves for the Huskies.

In the overtime period, Southern Maine dominated the action, forcing three penalty corners and holding the ball in their offensive third. Bubier notched the deciding goal after McDaniel carried the ball down the right side of the field and drove a pass in front of the goal. 

Fitchburg State (10-7, 6-5 LEC) advances to the first round of the Little East Tournament and awaits its seed for Tuesday’s contest. Southern Maine (8-12, 5-6 LEC) also advances to the LEC playoffs on Tuesday.
