Fitchburg State Powers Past Westfield State, 6-2

Roma nets second hat-trick in key Little East Conference victory

WESTFIELD, Mass. (October 20, 2010) – Senior midfielder Mari Roma (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) registered her second hat-trick of the season to power Fitchburg State to a 6-2 victory over Westfield State University in Little East Conference action this evening.

Roma snapped a 1-1 tie with an unassisted goal in the 13th minute of the match and later gave Fitchburg State a two goal edge (3-1) with her second marker of the game off sophomore Jamie Kelley’s (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) assist. The Falcons grabbed a commanding 4-1 advantage before the break as freshman Rebecca Bush (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) netted her fifth marker of the season at the 23:49 mark.

In the second half, Fitchburg State continued it’s hot-shooting as Roma and senior Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) connected for back-to-back scores over a 0:46 span. Roma completed her hat-trick on the evening at the 40:29 mark before Jacobs converted her team-leading 16th goal of the season at 41:15.

Roma paced the Fitchburg State with six points and three goals scored, while Jacobs added one score, one helper and three points on the night. Junior Kaylee Bergeron (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) also added a marker in the win for the Falcons. Westfield State junior Jessi Gould (Canton, Mass./Canton)  led the Owl’s offensive pursuit with a pair of goals in the contest, including her team-best 17th score of the season.

Fitchburg State outshot Westfield by a margin of 15-10, but the Owls held a 10-4 advantage in penalty corners. Sophomore goalie Abbie Brown (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) posted six saves in the victory for the Falcons, while freshman Rachel Mays (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) added ten minutes of shutout work.

Fitchburg State (9-5, 6-3 LEC) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to Keene State at 1:30 p.m. Westfield State (5-9, 2-6 LEC) will battle Eastern Connecticut on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
