Fitchburg State Breezes Past Rivier, 8-0

Kelley totals six points in Falcons fourth victory of the season

NASHUA, N.H. (September 22, 2011) – The Fitchburg State field hockey team registered five, second half goals to cruise to an 8-0 non-conference victory over Rivier College this evening.

Fitchburg State junior Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) led all scorers in the contest, totaling a game-high six points with two goals and two assists. Seniors Mari Roma (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) and Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) were also strong with a pair of markers, while junior Mary-Anne Goodsell (W. Springfield, Mass./White Oaks) and sophomore Rebecca Bush (Littleton, Mass./Littleton) added one tally apiece on the night.

The Falcons scored the only goal it would need just 18 minutes into the contest as Kelley converted an unassisted marker for her first goal of the evening. Roma followed suit just five minutes later before Jacobs capped the first half scoring at the 24:10 mark.

In the second half, Fitchburg State continued its offensive success, posting five more scores en route to the victory. Goodsell wasted no time in the Falcons scoring pursuit, touching the back of the net just 1:18 into the period, while Jacobs added her second goal of the night moments later. Kelley, Roma and Bush completed the Falcons scoring on the evening, converting consecutive scores to end the half.

Fitchburg State was in total control of the contest, posting 34 shots on net and limiting the Raiders to only two attempts all game. The Falcons also registered an incredible 16 penalty corners, pressuring the Rivier defense consistently for their fourth win of the season. Senior Taylor Begin (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) needed only one save in her complete game effort for the Falcons, while Makenzie Flagg (Shirley, Mass./Lunenburg) stopped 17 for the hosts.

Fitchburg State (4-3, 1-1 LEC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Bridgewater State University at 2 p.m. Rivier (2-5. 0-0 NAC) will visit Husson College on Saturday at 6 p.m.
