Fitchburg State Defeats Eastern Connecticut, 3-1

Morrissey collects three points in Falcons conference victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 26, 2012) – Freshman Erin Morrissey (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) notched three points on one goal and an assist as the Fitchburg State field hockey team defeated Eastern Connecticut State University, 3-1 in Little East Conference action this evening.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring in the ninth minute as Morrissey knocked home a rebound off the stick of senior Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) and collected her second marker of the season. The Falcons doubled their lead (2-0) with just over ten minutes remaining in the half as Kelley fired a shot from the left side of the circle through traffic and collected her eighth tally of the season.

Following the intermission, Eastern Connecticut broke its scoring silence early in the second period as freshman Hannah Keiser (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) was awarded a penalty stroke in the 42nd minute. Keiser took her stroke from just outside the cage and blasted a shot to to the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

The Green and Gold capped the game's scoring with just over 15 minutes remaining in the contest as freshman Christian Armstrong (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) notched her first collegiate score off a penalty corner with assists from Morrissey and senior Kelly Finn (Fitchburg, Mass./Saint Bernards).

Throughout the contest, Eastern Connecticut out shot Fitchburg State 20-13, while the host Falcons held a 6-4 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, sophomore Lucy Holewa (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) registered 13 saves in the complete game effort for Fitchburg State, while sophomore Olivia Mullen (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) made six stops for Eastern Connecticut State.

Fitchburg State (5-3, 2-2 LEC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Framingham State University at 10 a.m. Eastern Connecticut State (3-5, 1-3 LEC) will visit Plymouth State University on Saturday at 12 p.m.
