Salem State Doubles Up Fitchburg State, 2-0

Holewa stops nine shots for Falcons in LEC setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 21, 2013) – The Fitchburg State field hockey was in action this morning, dropping a 2-0 decision to Salem State University in Little East Conference (LEC) action at Elliot Field.

In the opening period of play, Salem State took the lead at the 13:49 mark as sophomore forward Kathleen Clark (Southboro, Mass.) collected a feed from senior Lauren Pazdziorny (Middleboro, Mass.) and tucked the ball inside the near post for her second tally of the season for the 1-0 advantage.

Fitchburg State nearly knotted the score with less than five minutes remaining in the half as freshman Stephanie Stearns (Mystic, Conn.) inserted the ball off a penalty corner to senior midfielder Rebecca Bush (Littleton, Mass.) at the top of the circle and blasted a shot on frame that was turned away by Vikings goaltender Michaela Boyer (South Hadley, Mass.) to preserve the 1-0 lead going into intermission.

Following the break, the Falcons saw a pair of excellent scoring opportunities in the 61st minute of play when freshman Madeline Hoffman (Mansfield, Mass.) and junior Kaitlyn Silva (West Townsend, Mass.) both had point blank shots denied by Boyer.

The Vikings upped their margin (2-0) at the 63:19 mark as freshman Natalia Bourne (Tewksbury, Mass.) threaded a long pass to classmate Katie Pietrini (Beverly, Mass.) up the middle of the field and converted a break away opportunity for her fifth marker of the season, resulting in the 2-0 victory.

Throughout the match, Salem State saw a 16-14 advantage in shots, while each team registered seven penalty corners. In goal, junior Lucy Holewa (Londonderry, N.H.) registered nine saves for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while Boyer notched six stops for Salem State en-route to her second victory of the season.

Fitchburg State (2-3, 0-2 LEC) will be back in action on Thursday as it travels to Becker College at 4 p.m. Salem State (4-2, 2-0 LEC) will host the Lancers of Worcester State University next Saturday at 12 p.m.
