Fitchburg State Shuts Out Becker, 3-0

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Fitchburg State University defeated Becker College, 3-0, in a non-conference field hockey contest on Thursday night at Elliot Field.

The Falcons struck first at 6:13 when sophomore Stephanie Stearns first struck the post, then collected the ball from the scrum in front of the cage to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead.

Becker nearly evened the score in the ninth minute when
Katherine Landanno and Brittany Cormier fired back-to-back shots on net, but Falcon goaltender Judith Valentin made two stops to preserve the lead.

At the 23
rd minute in the second half Becker had their first penalty corner of the contest, but Valentino again came up with another stop on a Jazmin Garcia shot.

Sophomore
Madeline Hoffman doubled the Fitchburg State lead at 19:38 when she received a pass in front of the net from freshman Kerra Anastasia. The Green and Gold extended the advantage to 3-0 at 5:52 when sophomore Nicole Fors pushed the ball in front of the net, which was picked up by classmate Julia Pecoraro, who buried it for her third marker of the year.

Overall, Fitchburg State held a 23-7 advantage in shots, while having a 9-3 edge in penalty corners.

Valentino recorded her first win of the season, making four saves on the night, while freshman
Jordyn Conway made her collegiate debut in the cage and made one stop. Gabrielle Gallo suffered the loss for the Hawks, registering 13 saves.

Fitchburg State will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Little East Conference foe Bridgewater State University at 12:00 pm. Becker College will host the Lasers of Lasell College on Tuesday for a contest at 4:30 pm.
