Holewa registers 17 saves for the Falcons in LEC setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 13, 2014) – Sophomore Kayla Renaud (Somers, Conn.) collected a pair of markers as Keene State defeated Fitchburg State, 3-0 in Little East Conference (LEC) field hockey action this morning at Elliot Field..

In the opening frame, Keene State took the lead at the 6:43 mark as sophomore Sami Smith (Merrimack, N.H.) collected a rebound of the stick of senior Marisa Lemoine (Berlin, N.H.) and tucked the ball inside the near post for the 1-0 lead.

The Falcons best scoring chance of the half came 13 minutes into the stanza when junior Julia Gimenez (Framingham, Mass.) and sophomore Julia Pecoraro (Yarmouth, Mass.) put back-to-back shots on target that Keene State keeper Meaghan Dwyer (Rutland, Mass.) turned aside to preserve the 1-0 advantage going in intermission.

Following the break, the Owls doubled their margin (2-0) in the 46th minute of play as Renaud put home a rebounded shot from sophomore Brittney Cardente (N. Kingston, R.I.) for her fourth tally of the season. Keene State capped the game's scoring 15 minutes later as Renaud received a pass from sophomore Marita Brothers (Stafford Springs, Conn.) and blasted a shot into the back of the cage for her second marker of the contest, resulting in the 3-0 final.

Throughout the contest, Keene State controlled the offensive front, out shooting Fitchburg State 42-15, while limiting the Falcons to just three penalty corner. In the cage, senior Lucy Holewa (Londonderry, N.H.) finished with 17 saves in the complete game effort for the Green and Gold, while Dwyer collected seven stops for the Owls en-route to the victory.

Fitchburg State (1-3, 0-1 LEC) will be back in action on Wednesday as it hosts the Raiders of Rivier University at 4 p.m. Keene State (3-2, 1-0 LEC) will hosts the Lord Jeffs of Amherst College on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
