Plymouth State Shuts Down Fitchburg State, 3-0

Holewa and Valentin combine to stop seven shot for Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass.– Senior forward Kristen Morris (Stoughton, Mass..) registered a pair of goals as Plymouth State defeated Fitchburg State, 3-0 in Little East Conference (LEC) field hockey action this afternoon at Elliot Field.

Plymouth State jumped out to an early lead just 3:01 into the opening frame as senior Morris blasted a shot into the lower right corner of the cage off a feed from senior Sam Carberry (Shrewsbury, Penn.) for the 1-0 advantage.

The Panthers doubled their lead at the 18:01 mark when Morris collected a rebounded shot of the stick of senior Nikki Garvey (Canaan, N.H.) and tucked the ball inside the near post for her second score of the contest for the 2-0 margin after 35 minutes of play.

In the second half, Fitchburg State threatened seven minutes into the frame when junior forward Erin Morrissey (Hubbardston, Mass.) and sophomore Stephanie Stearns (Mystic, Conn.) both fired shots on frame, but Panthers goaltender Alivia Bates (Pennsauken, N.J.) was able to turn away both shots.

The visitors secured their eighth victory on the in the 48th minute of play as Carberry collected a loose ball and blasted a shot inside the near post for her seventh marker on the season, resulting in the 3-0 final.

Throughout the match, Plymouth State held a 16-8 advantage in shots, while also holding a 7-2 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, senior Lucy Holewa (Londonderry, N.H.) and junior Judith Valentin (Brockton, Mass.) combined to stop seven shots for the Falcons, while Bates made four saves en-route to the complete game shutout victory for the Plymouth State.

Fitchburg State (4-8, 1-6 LEC) will be back in action again on Tuesday as it travel to Elms College at 7 p.m. Plymouth State (8-2, 6-1 LEC) will visit New England College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
