Fitchburg State Shoots Past Rivier, 2-0

Miller nets first collegiate marker in Falcons non-conference victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Fitchburg State field hockey was in action this afternoon, defeating the Raiders Rivier University, 2-0 in non-conference action at Elliot Field.

Following a scoreless first half Fitchburg State, broke a 0-0 stalemate at the 40:56 mark as sophomore forward Stephanie Stearns  collected a feed from senior Kaitlyn Silva  and tucked the ball inside the near post for the 1-0 advantage.

The Falcons upped its margin in the 48th minute of action when freshman Bailey Miller  connected for her first collegiate tally on an assist from sophomore Julia Pecoraro, resulting in the 2-0 final.

In the opening stanza, the Green and Gold nearly took the lead at the 30:41 mark as junior forward Erin Morrissey and sophomore Madeline Hoffman fired back-to-back shot on frame that Raiders' goaltender Makenzie Flagg made a pair of outstanding saves on to keep the match scoreless after 45 minutes of play.

Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State held a 30-3 advantage in shots, while also holding a 14-4 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, senior Lucy Holewa  made two first half saves for the Falcons in 57 minutes of work, while Flagg stopped 14 shots for Rivier in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (2-3, 0-1 LEC) will be back in action again on Saturday as it travels to Salem State University for a contest starting at 12 p.m. Rivier University (0-5, 0-1 GNAC) will visit Mount Ida College on Saturday at 2 p.m.
