Fitchburg State Soars Past Salem State, 4-0

Stearns and Pecoraro combine for six points in Falcons LEC victory

SALEM, Mass. – The Fitchburg State field hockey was in action this afternoon, defeating Salem State University, 4-0 in Little East Conference (LEC) action at Alumni Field.

In the opening period of play, Fitchburg State took the lead just 1:27 into the contest as freshman forward Bailey Miller collected her second marker of the season, using an assist from sophomore Stephanie Stearns for the 1-0 margin.

The Falcons would take a 2-0 advantage into the break in the 17th minute of action when sophomore Julia Pecoraro blasted a shot into the back of the cage for her second tally on the season.

Following intermission, the Green and Gold upped its margin at the 43:55 mark as junior forward Erin Morrissey redirected a shot off the stick of new comer Kerra Anastasia into the net for the 3-0 lead.

Fitchburg State secured its third victory of the season when Stearns slipped the ball inside the near post off a penalty corner as Pecoraro inserted the ball to sophomore Madeline Hoffman at the top of the circle before Pecoraro crossed the ball over to Stearns, resulting in the 4-0 final.

Throughout the match, Fitchburg State saw a slim 11-10 advantage in shots, while the Vikings held an 8-7 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, senior Lucy Holewa posted five stops for the Falcons en-route to her third victory on the year, while sophomore Carolyn Woodin made three saves for Salem State in 45 minutes of action.

Fitchburg State (3-3, 1-1 LEC) will be back in action on Thursday as it hosts the Hawks of  Becker College at 4:30 p.m. Salem State (1-5, 0-2 LEC) will visit Saint Joseph's College (Me.) on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
