Fitchburg State Falls At Westfield State, 3-1

Morrissey collects lone goal for the Falcons

 

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore forward Holly Brouillette registered four points on a pair of markers as the Westfield State field hockey team defeated Fitchburg State, 3-1 in Little East Conference (LEC) action this evening at Alumni Field.

Westfield State opened the scoring at the 31:42 mark as Brouillette collected the ball near midfield and raced down the field before blasting a shot into the back of the cage for her seventh score on season to make the score 1-0 going into the intermission.

Following the break, the Owls doubled their lead in the 41st minute of action when junior Emily Williams received a feed from senior Kelly Kenney and deposited the ball inside the far post for the 2-0 advantage.

The hosts upped their lead (3-0) about ten minutes later as Brouillette fired a shot into the lower left corner of the cage for her second tally of the contest. Fitchburg State broke its scoring silence at the 54:00 mark when junior forward Erin Morrissey slipped the ball inside the near post off an assist from sophomore Julia Pecoraro, resulting in the 3-1 final.

Throughout the match, Westfield State held a 19-9 advantage in shots, while also holding a 11-6 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, junior Judith Valentin posted seven saves in 24:50 minutes of action for Fitchburg State, while sophomore Alanah Melanson made four stops for the Owls in the complete game effort.

Fitchburg State (4-7, 1-5 LEC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts the Panthers of Plymouth State for a contest starting at 2 p.m. Westfield State (5-5, 2-4 LEC) will host Framingham State University on Saturday at 12 p.m.
