Fitchburg State Blanks Colby-Sawyer, 4-0

Richard nets five points in Falcons non-conference victory

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Sophomore forward Molly Richard tallied five points on two goals and an assist as the Fitchburg State field hockey team defeated Colby-Sawyer, 4-0 in non-conference action this afternoon at the Sally Shaw Veitch Track & Field.

Fitchburg State opened the scoring in the 11th minute of the first half as senior Madeline Hoffman collected a feed from Richard and blasted a shot inside the far post for her second goal on the season for the 1-0 advantage.

The Falcons doubled their lead (2-0) at the 17:44 mark when senior forward Erin Morrissey inserted a ball to freshman Taylor Eyles off a penalty corner at the top of the circle before Eyles slide a shot into the back of the net for her second score of the season.

The Green and Gold upped its margin with just under three minutes remaining in the opening half as Richard redirected a shot off the stick of Hoffman into the left side of the cage for her third goal on the year to make the score 3-0 going into the break.

In the second half, Fitchburg State made it a four goal game at the 42:25 mark when Richard struck for her second tally of the contest, firing a shot into the lower right corner of the net, resulting in the 4-0 final.

Throughout the game, Colby-Sawyer finished with an 11-5 advantage in shots, while also holding an 8-5 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, sophomore Brittany Linane and junior Jordyn Conway combined to stop seven shots for the Falcons, while sophomore Xena Ras made one save for the Chargers in 70 minutes of action.

Fitchburg State (3-1, 1-1 LEC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth at 11 a.m. Colby-Sawyer (4-2, 0-0 NAC) will host Becker College on Saturday for a contest starting at 1 p.m.
