Fitchburg State Defeats Eastern Connecticut State, 2-1

Miller registers three points for the Falcons in key LEC victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Fitchburg State junior midfielder Bailey Miller collected three points on one goal and an assist as the Falcons defeated Eastern Connecticut State, 2-1 in Little East Conference (LEC) action this evening at Elliot Field.

After a defensive-heavy first half, the Green and Gold took the lead with just 1:24 remaining in the opening stanza as senior forward Erin Morrissey collected a rebound off the right-side post before sliding a pass over to Miller, who deposited the ball inside the far post for her first goal on the season for the 1-0 advantage going into the break.

In the second half, the Falcons doubled their lead (2-0) in the 44th minute of action when senior midfielder Madeline Hoffman collected a feed from Miller in front of the cage and proceeded to blast a shot into the left side of the net for her fourth marker of the year.

Eastern Connecticut State broke its scoring silence roughly 11 minutes later as junior forward Alex Kalgren collected a rebound off the stick of senior Paige Schneider and tucked the ball inside the lower right corner for her fourth goal of the 2016 campaign to make the score 2-1.

The Warriors revved up the offensive pressure inside the final ten minutes of the game, but Fitchburg State's defense stood up to the challenge with many individual efforts on the defensive end, resulting in the 2-1 final.

Throughout the game, Eastern Connecticut State held a narrow 10-9 advantage in shots, while also holding a 6-5 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, sophomore Brittany Linane turned away three shots for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while senior Samantha Scavo finished with four saves for the Warriors in 70 minutes of action.
