Richard registers three points for Falcons in key LEC victory

DANBURY, Conn. – Sophomore forward Molly Richard netted three points on one goal and one assist to propel the Fitchburg State field hockey team to a 2-1 double overtime victory over the Colonials of Western Connecticut State in Little East Conference (LEC) action this evening at the Western Athletic Complex.

Western Connecticut State took the lead at the 14:10 mark as sophomore midfielder Olympia Moulton gathered a feed from freshman forward Allie Noteware and deposited the ball into the back of the cage for her fifth goal on the season to make the score 1-0.

The Falcons threatened late in the first half when senior midfielder Maddie Hoffman and classmate Erin Morrissey put back-to-back shots on frame, but Colonials netminder Kristy Trotta turned aside both shots to preserve the 1-0 lead going into the break.

Following the intermission, Fitchburg State knotted the score (1-1) in the 48th minute of play as Hoffman fired a shot inside the near post for her fifth marker of the year off an assist from Richard to force the overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime, Richard potted the game winner for the Green and Gold 2:06 into the second overtime as the second-year Falcon collected a rebound off the stick of Hoffman and buried a shot into the right side of the cage for her team-leading 11th score of the season, resulting in the 2-1 final.

Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State held a commanding 32-4 advantage in shots, while also holding a 15-2 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, sophomore Brittany Linane turned a side one shot for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while Trotta was outstanding for the Colonials, making 17 saves in 87:06 minutes of action.

Fitchburg State (7-4, 5-4 LEC) returns to action on Thursday as it hosts the Raiders of Rivier University for a contest starting at 7 p.m. Western Connecticut State (3-11, 1-8 LEC) will host Framingham State University on Saturday at 4 p.m.
