Fitchburg State Defeats Castleton, 3-1

Morrissey scored two goals for Falcons in non-conference victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. -  In their first ever meeting against Castleton University, the Fitchburg State field hockey team registered a 3-1 win over the visiting Spartan in non-conference action this evening at Elliot Field.

Senior forward Erin Morrissey scored twice, capturing her fourth and fifth goals of the year a while sophomore forward Molly Richard tallied her team-leading 16th goal of the to lead the way for the Green and Gold.

In the first half of play, Fitchburg State raced out to quick 1-0 lead at the 12:14 mark as Morrissey settled a loose ball in front of the cage and tucked the ball inside the far post before the Falcons doubled their advantage (2-0) roughly two and half minutes later when Richard collected a feed from senior midfielder Madeline Hoffman and rifled a shot into the left side of the cage.

Fitchburg State dominated both sides of the field in the first half and sustained heavy pressure in the offensive zone as the Falcons put 13 shots on net while the Spartans only managed 7.

Following the break, the hosts upped its margin in the 42nd minute of action as Morrissey converted a penalty stroke, lofting a shot into the upper right corner of the cage for her second score of the contest to make the score 3-0.

Castleton broke its scoring silence with just over three minutes remaining in the game when senior forward Haley Spittle fired a shot just inside the right post for her seventh goal on the year, resulting in the 3-1 final.

Throughout the match, Fitchburg State and Castleton registered 17 shots apiece, while the Spartans held a slim 9-6 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, sophomore Brittany Linane and junior Jordyn Conway combined to stop seven shots for the Falcons, while senior Meeghan Doris turned aside nine shots for the Spartans.

Fitchburg State (11-4, 6-4 MASCAC) returns to action this Saturday as it travels to Southern Maine (7-10, 6-4 LEC) for a contest at 11am. Castleton (6-11, 2-2 NAC) is also on the road on Saturday as it takes on the Terriers of Thomas College at 11am.
