Fitchburg State Corners Southern Maine 2-0

GORHAM, Maine  --  Senior Erin Morrissey scored a pair of goals to lead the Fitchburg State University Falcons to a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

Fitchburg State improves to 12-4 overall with the victory over the Huskies and improved to 7-4 in the Little East Conference.  Suffering its third straight loss, and second consecutive set back in the Little East, Southern Maine is now 7-11 overall and 6-5 in the conference.

In an evenly played opening half, both teams registered a pair of shots and battled to a 0-0 score at the break.  Morrisey put the Falcons on the scoreboard early in the second half scoring her sixth goal of the season in the 39th minute.  Morrisey collected the rebound off of a saved scoring attempt from sophomore Molly Richard for the 1-0 FSU lead.

The score remained unchanged for a majority of the second half with both teams trading opportunities.  FSU had a chance to double its lead in the 57th minute when it was awarded a penalty shot, but Huskies' senior goalkeeper Amanda Kasbohm denied the bid from senior Nicole Fors. The Falcons did manage an insurance goal minutes later, however, when Morrissey's second goal of the game came off of a well-executed corner, earning Fors and junior Bailey Miller an assist.

Kasbohm finished the game making three saves in the loss.  USM sophomore Morgan Gray made a defensive save for the Huskies.  Falcon sophomore Brittany Linane made a pair of saves to earn the shutout and her eleventh win of the season.

Southern Maine returns to action on Sunday (12:00 p.m.) when it hosts UMaine Farmington in a non-conference match up.  Fitchburg State travels to WPI for its next contest on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.).
