Fitchburg State Clipped By Roger Williams, 3-2 (2OT)

Richard and Noonan net one goal each for Falcons in non-conference setback

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Fitchburg State field hockey team dropped a tough 3-2 double overtime decision to the Hawks of Roger Williams University in non-conference action this evening at Bayside Field.

In the first half, Roger Williams opened the scoring at the 24:31 mark as senior midfielder Meghan Curran received a feed from sophomore forward Lillian McNeil and fired a shot into the back of the cage for her third tally on the year for the 1-0 margin.

Fitchburg State knotted the score roughly two and half minutes later when sophomore forward Molly Richard notched her team leading 18th marker of the season.  Senior forward Erin Morrissey inserted the ball to Richard at the top of the circle off a penalty corner before blasting a shot inside the near post to make the score 1-1 going into intermission.

Following the break, the Hawks regained the lead in the 40th minute of play as Curran tucked the ball into the left side of the net for her second tally of the contest off an assist from senior Abby Treweek for the 2-1 advantage.

The Falcons retied the game (2-2) at the 47:57 mark when junior forward Casey Noonan redirected a shot off the stick of senior Nicole Fors inside the far post for her sixth score of the 2016 campaign to force the overtime period.

After a scoreless first overtime, Roger Williams secured the victory in the 97th minute of action as junior midfielder Juliana Miccile found the back of the net, depositing the ball into the lower left corner of cage for her fifth tally on the season, resulting in the 3-2 final.

Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State held a 30-14 edge in shots, while also holding a 12-6 margin in penalty corners. In the cage, junior Brittany Linane stopped five shots for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while sophomore Mya Lunn made 14 saves for Roger Williams in 96:18 minutes of action.

Fitchburg State (13-5, 7-4 LEC) returns to action on Saturday as it hosts the Panthers of Plymouth State in a LEC quarterfinal round matchup at 7:30 p.m. Roger Williams (4-14, 3-8 CCC) will travel to Gordon College on Saturday for a CCC matchup starting at 1 p.m.
