Falcons Soar Past Vikings, 8-3

Richard and DeHorsey lead Falcons to key LEC victory 

Salem, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University field hockey team defeated the Vikings of Salem State University, 8-3 in Little East Conference (LEC) action this afternoon at Alumni Field.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State opened the scoring just 39 seconds into the contest as senior forward Casey Noonan (Feeding Hills, Mass.) fired a shot into the back of the cage for her fourth tally on the year for the 1-0 margin.

The Falcons doubled their lead (2-0) at the 10:41 mark when sophomore forward Aislinn DeHorsey (Leominster, Mass.) connected on her team-leading 12th score of the season before the Green and Gold extended its advantage late in the frame as junior Molly Richard (Leominster, Mass.) deposited the ball into the back of the cage for her 11th score on the season to make the score 5-1 going into the break.

Following intermission, Fitchburg State upped its lead (7-1) on back-to-back goals from Richard and one marker by Noonan, before the Vikings answered with goals by senior Marissa Penge (Liverpool, N.Y.) and sophomore Casie Curtain (Wrentham, Mass.), resulting in the 8-3 final.

38th meeting between two schools on field hockey with the Falcons 15-21-2 when taking on the Vikings.

Fitchburg State has won the last four contests against Salem State and eight of the last nine.

Sophomore goaltender Rhiannon Fletcher (Royalston, Mass.) made five first half saves for the Falcons to collect her seventh win on the year, while sophomore Gabriella Cerro (Beverly, Mass.) stopped shots for the Vikings in 50:20 minutes of action.

Fitchburg State finished with an 18-11 margin in shots, while Salem State held a narrow 6-4 edge in penalty corners.

Falcons will host the Engineers of WPI on Tuesday for a contest starting at 4 p.m. The Vikings will travel to Springfield College on the same day to take on the Pride at 4 p.m.
