Richard nets lone goal for Falcons in non-conference setback 

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University field hockey team suffered a tough 2-1 setback to the Engineers of WPI in non-conference action this afternoon at Elliot Field.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State took the lead at the 8:07 mark as junior forward Molly Richard (Leominster, Mass.) collected a feed from senior Casey Noonan (Feeding Hills, Mass.) off a penalty corner and lofted a shot into the upper right corner for her 11th goal on the season for the 1-0 margin.

WPI knotted the score (1-1) in the 23rd minute of play when sophomore forward Bridget Sullivan (Wilmington, Mass.) gathered a loose ball in front of cage and struck for her fourth tally of the year.

Following the break, the Engineers grabbed the lead at the 55:12 mark as freshman Kaitlyn Hess (Milford, N.H.) blasted a shot inside the far post for her fourth marker of the 2017 campaign, resulting in the 2-1 final.

Inside the Numbers

12th meeting between two schools in field hockey with the Falcons 3-8-0 when taking on the Engineers.

Two teams spilt the previous four meetings with Fitchburg State securing a 2-1 win over WPI last season at Alumni Stadium.

Sophomore goaltender Kasey Mammone (Leominster, Mass.) stopped five second half shots for the Falcons in the setback, while junior Karen Marshall (Mariaville, Maine) made six saves for the Engineers in the complete game effort.

WPI finished with a 20-12 advantage in shots, while also holding a 15-7 edge in penalty corners.
