Bartell nets first collegiate marker in key LEC victory

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University field hockey team defeated the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth, 3-0 in Little East Conference (LEC) action this morning at Elliot Field.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 10:55 mark as freshman Jordan Bartell (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) gathered a loose ball off a shot from senior Maggie Gallagher (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) and struck for her first collegiate tally.

The Falcons doubled their margin (2-0) in the 30th minute of play when junior Aislinn DeHorsey (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) deposited a shot inside the far post for seventh marker of the year before the Green and Gold extended their advantage minutes later as senior Molly Richard (Leominster, Mass./St. Bernards) connected for her team-leading ninth score of the 2018 campaign to make the score 3-0 going into the break..

Following the intermission, UMass Dartmouth threatened midway through the second half when senior Mary Brown (Leicester, Mass./Leicester) and freshman Kylie Dias (Fall River, Mass./Durfee) put back-to-back shots on frame, but Falcon keeper Abby Bryant (Ware, Mass./Quabbin Regional) turned away both shots to preserve the shutout, resulting in the 3-0 final.

Inside the Numbers

This morning's contest marked the 21st meeting between the two teams in the sport of field hockey with the Falcons currently 7-14-0 all-time when taking on the Corsairs.

UMass Dartmouth had won nine of the previous ten contests against Fitchburg State, including a 2-0 decision last season at Cressy Field.

In the cage, Bryant made seven saves for the Falcons, en-route to her second shutout of the season, while senior Alison Burke (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) stopped 11 shots for the Corsairs in the setback.

Sophomore Chloe Gladu (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) collected one defensive save for Fitchburg State, while senior Kassidy Cestodio (Westport, Mass./Westport) notched one defensive save for UMass Dartmouth.

Fitchburg State finished with a 17-9 advantage in shots, while also holding a 10-4 edge in penalty corners.

Falcons will travel to Castleton on Tuesday to take on the Spartans for a Little East Conference matchup, starting at 7:00 PM. Corsairs will host the Panthers of Plymouth State on the same date for a conference tilt at 7:00 PM.
