Falcon Trio Named MASCAC Players of the Week

Valliere, Lane and Muolo earn weekly honors in their respective sports

FITCHBURG, Mass. (December 14, 2010) – Junior Zach Valliere (Douglas, Mass./Douglas), sophomore Emily Lane (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) and senior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) were tabbed the MASCAC Players of the Week in their respective sports as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.

On the court, Valliere earned his first weekly honor in a Fitchburg State uniform after averaging a double-double effort (10.7 ppg, 10.1 rbs/g) in a 2-1 week for the Falcons. He led the Falcons to an 81-80 victory over Fisher College, posting 18 points and ten boards, while adding a 13 point, ten rebound effort in a 78-63 setback to 23rd ranked WPI.

Joining Valliere with her first weekly honor of the season was second-year standout, Emily Lane. Lane was named the MASCAC’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, after posting a strong, four-event performance over the weekend. Lane finished 24th in the 60m hurdles (10.15) and 35th in the 800m (2:39.45), while running a leg of the 15th place 4x400 relay (4:04.25). In addition to her strong track outing, Lane also qualified for the ECAC Championships in the high-jump, totaling a height of 1.49m for seventh place overall.

Rounding out the Fitchburg State award winners this week was track and field member, Matt Muolo. Muolo earned his first MASCAC Field Athlete of the Week honor of the season after qualifying for the All-New England Championships and ECAC Championships at the Harvard Open. He finished fourth overall in the weight throw with a toss of 53’-11.75” while adding a sixth place showing in the shot-put with a Division III New England mark of 46’-6”.

Both the Fitchburg State track teams and the Fitchburg State men’s basketball team will be off until after the Christmas break when the resume play on January 4th. The men’s basketball team will play host to Anna Maria on January 4th with a match at 7:30 p.m., while the track and field squads will compete on January 15th at Tufts University.
