Fitchburg State Continues Past UMass Boston, 87-81

Fahey leads Falcons to fourth consecutive victory with a game-high 24 points

FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 22, 2011) – Junior Adam Fahey (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) collected a game-high 24 points to lead the Fitchburg State men's basketball past UMass Boston, 87-81 in non-conference action this evening.

Fahey led all scorers, shooting 9-of-17 from the floor and 3-of-7 from downtown, while adding four boards and two steals. Sophomore Brandon Selby (Baltimore, Md./Joppatowne) added 18 points and seven caroms to the mix, while senior Kyle Berk (Putnam Valley, N.Y./John Jay) and junior Zach Valliere (Douglas, Mass./Douglas) connected for 11 points apiece.

UMass Boston jumped out to an early lead throughout the first half, taking a 42-39 advantage into the locker rooms, but Fitchburg State rifled off 48 second half points to remain unbeaten and extend its current winning streak to four games. The Falcons opened the second half strong, stringing together a 16-1 run to post a 55-43 margin by the 15:39 mark. Fahey sparked the rally with a pair of buckets, including a shot from long range, while sophomore Mike Ingram-Rubin (Boston, Mass./Bedford) capped the rally with a lay-up and a three.

Fitchburg State maintained its double-digit lead extending its advantage to 14 midway through the period and to 17 by the 3:45 mark. Fahey led the Falcons with 17 of his 24 points in the frame, while Rubin and Selby added eight points apiece.

The Falcons used a 54.3% shooting effort in the second half, hitting 19-of-35 for the victory, while also connecting on 5-of-10 from three point range. The Beacons held a 53-47 advantage in rebounds, but shot just 25.0% from three point range with a 4-of-16 shooting effort.

Freshman Vinny DeLucia (Miami, Fla./Sagemont Upper School) led the UMass Boston attack with a team-high 23 points, while senior Isaac Jenkins (Pordenone, Italy/Savio Prep) added a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Cody Edmond (Plaquemine, La./Plaquemine) rounded out the Beacons top three threats with 12 points on the night.   

Fitchburg State (4-0, 0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action next Tuesday as it travels to Nichols College at 7:30 p.m. UMass Boston (0-2, 0-0 LEC) will host Wheelock College next Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
