Fitchburg State Extends Past Worcester State, 64-58

Valliere leads Falcons to third straight MASCAC win with 19 points

WORCESTER, Mass. (February 5, 2013) – The Fitchburg State men's basketball team clinched its third straight MASCAC victory after defeating the Lancers of Worcester State University, 64-58 this evening on the road.

Senior Zach Valliere (Douglas, Mass./Douglas) led the Fitchburg State offensive efforts with 19 points and nine rebounds, while classmate Tom Henneberry (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) was also solid with 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the field. Seniors Brandon Selby (Baltimore, Md./Joppatowne) and Jeremy Kimber (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg) chipped in with ten points apiece.

Despite trailing by as many as 12 throughout the first half and eight (34-26) at the break, Fitchburg State limited Worcester State to only 24 second half points to secure its third league victory. The trio of Selby, Valliere and Henneberry led the Falcons comeback, combining for 27 points in the second frame, while Kimber finished with six.

The Falcons opened the second half strong, using a 13-4 rally to post a one point lead at the 15:39 mark. Three consecutive buckets from Selby, Henneberry and Kimber kick started the rally, while a three point play from Selby gave Fitchburg State its first lead since the 8:30 mark of the first half (39-38).

After nine lead changes and five ties, Fitchburg State managed to cling to a 57-56 lead with just 2:33 remaining. The Falcons closed the door with a 7-2 run, using four consecutive free-throws from Henneberry and Kimber to ice the contest.

For the game, Fitchburg State shot 37.9% from the field (25-of-66), including 45.7% in the second half (14-of-31). The Falcons dominated the paint, outscoring the Lancers 42-14 on the evening and boasting a 48-36 advantage on the class.

Fitchburg State (12-8, 4-5 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it hosts Salem State University at 3 p.m. Worcester State (10-12, 4-6 MASCAC) will host Bridgewater State on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
