Falcons Cruise Past NEC, 78-45

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Fitchburg State outscored New England College by 26 points in the opening half, in route to a 78-45 victory in a non-conference men's basketball tilt on Tuesday evening.

The two teams traded baskets to kickoff the contest before the Falcons went on a 13-2 run to take a 15-2 advantage, and never relinquished the double-digit lead.

Fitchburg State turned 14 forced turnovers into 17 points, and held a 35-15 edge in rebounds to limit the Pilgrims to 11 points in the opening half of play. The Green & Gold were led in the first period by freshman center Maurice Greene, who had six points and ten rebounds in the opening 20 minutes.

The Falcons continued to add to their lead in the second stanza, going up by as many as 41 at the 13:51 mark on a Juan Lopez layup.

Fitchburg State was led by junior guard Keyon Armstrong with 11 points, while shooting 3-5 from the perimeter. Greene chipped finished the night with eight points and a career-high 12 caroms, and junior forward Kwame Lee had 10 points and six boards.

Junior guard Dezron Wilson had a game-high 14 points for the Pilgrims and a team-leading six rebounds in the losing effort.

Overall, the Falcons shot 40.2% (33-82) from the field and 8-22 (36.4%) from downtown, while NEC shot 33.3% (15-45) from the floor (50% in the 2nd half), while going 4-141 (28.6%) from beyond the arc. The hosts held a 36-26 advantage in rebounds.

The Falcons (5-2) will return to the hardwood on Thursday, Nov. 4 as they travel to Wheaton for a 7:00 pm tipoff. NEC (3-3) will kickoff North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Saturday, Nov. 6 as they host Castleton State at 3:00 pm.
