Suffolk Blanks Fitchburg State, 4-0

Leiser stops 19 shots in net for Falcons despite loss

BOSTON, Mass. (February 7, 2009) - Suffolk University registered three goals in the third period to cruise to a 4-0 victory over Fitchburg State College in ECAC Northeast action this evening.

Senior Kyle Cook (Chino Hills, Calif./Bay City) led the Suffolk front line, posting a game-high four points on one goal and three assists. Junior Pat Welch (Dorchester, Mass./Bay State Breakers) was also solid with three points on one score and two helpers, while senior Dan Pencinger (Randolph, N.J./Trinity-Pawling) added one goal and one dish.

After a silent first half, Suffolk opened the scoring early in the second frame as Cook netted his tenth goal of the season at the 4:11 mark. Cook connected for the potential game-winner off assists from Welch and freshman J. Andrew Wein (Barnegat, N.J./Syracuse).

In the third period, Suffolk exploded for three unanswered goals to clinch their sixth victory of the season. Pencinger started the Ram rally with his fourth goal of the season midway through the period, while Welch and senior Mitch Sabo (Bay Canyon, Calif./Youngstown) posted back-to-back scores in the closing minutes.

Fitchburg State controlled the offensive temp, out-shooting Suffolk 29-23, including 14-5 in the second period, but sophomore Jeff Rose (Collinsville, Conn./Valley) turned away all 29 shots for the Rams. Freshman Bobby Leiser (Monroe, N.Y./New York Applecore) registered 19 saves in the complete game effort for the Falcons.

Fitchburg State (8-8-5, 5-5-3 ECAC NE) will hit the ice again on Wednesday as it hosts Johnson and Wales University at 7 p.m. Suffolk (6-13-2, 5-6-2 ECAC NE) will be in action again Wednesday as it travels to Plymouth State at 6 p.m.
