Vets lifts Falcons to key conference win with overtime marker

SALEM, Mass. (January 21, 2010) - The Fitchburg State ice hockey team collected its fifth consecutive victory as the Falcons posted a 5-4 overtime victory against MASCAC foe, Salem State College this evening.

Freshman John Vets netted the game-
winning goal just 2:47 into the
overtime period.

After three periods of deadlock action, freshman John Vets (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) lifted Fitchburg State to its sixth conference victory, netting the game-winning marker just 2:47 into the overtime frame. Vets sealed the Falcons victory with his team-high ninth goal of the season off assists from freshmen Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) and Kevin McCready (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Mohawk CC)

After an electric first period which witnessed a combined six goals, Salem State gained a one goal advantage in the second as sophomore Ian Flanigan (New Hampton, N.H./Boston Bulldogs) deposited his second goal of the year with helpers from Casey Terreri (Warwick, R.I./South Shore Kings) and Matt Kenline (Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis Yarmouth). Fitchburg State responded in the third with a Chris Costigan (Salem, N.H./Northern Cyclones) marker just 0:09 into the period which set up Vets' heroics in overtime play.

Junior Chris Riggs (Sewell, N.J./Fort Vancouver Pioneers) ignited the Falcons first period onslaught with one goal and two assists, while senior captain Andrew Hutton (Brewster, Mass./Boston Harbor Wolves) added one score and one helper. Costigan also added to the scoring mix with his first goal of the contest.

Salem State controlled the shot charts with a 43-28 advantage in targets, but junior goaltender Robert Vorse (Leominster, Mass./Bay State Breakers) notched 39 saves to earn his fifth victory of the season. Vorse was sharp after a weeklong break, holding the Vikings silent for the final 36 minutes of the contest. Salem State goaltender Sam Avoine (Ste-Perpetue, Quebec/Laconia Leafs) stopped 23 shots in net for the Vikings.
